"Farmers by Nature has shattered my expectations, so deeply has the collective approach been transformed and so vast is its scope. There is magic in every gesture." –Marc Medwin, Dusted in Exile

"4-Stars. Moves with a fearlessness borne from seasoned virtuosity and uncompromised vision. More rewarding with every listen."
–Bradley Bambarger, DownBeat

"4-Stars. The wide idiomatic scope, genuine embrace of risk and steadfast rejection of cliché make Farmers By Nature an undeniably vital presence in any kind of contemporary creative music." –Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwise

"The abundance of talent, trust, self-confidence, patience and intuition required to collectively improvise at such a high level for more than an hour at a time is possessed by the three members of Farmers by Nature and precious few others." –Britt Robson, JazzTimes

"4-Stars. Breathtakingly fluent. It's just the kind of free music that recruits new followers." – John Fordham, The Guardian

"All three are perfectly attuned, a state of grace that persists throughout."
–John Sharpe, The New York City Jazz Record"

"Enrapturing how the disparate rhythms of the three players entwine in ever-shifting polyrhythmic counterpoint. This is a strong contender for jazz album of the year."
–Steve Holtje, Culture Catch

"Farmers By Nature must live by this creed that goes “nobody sounds good unless everybody sounds good,” and at no given point when one person is doing something standout there isn’t the other two giving their best effort to make that moment special. .. Each repeat listen unveils something new. Those kinds of things are tough to achieve with even premeditated composing, but it’s second nature to them. Farmers By Nature reaped a bountiful harvest in France."
–Victor Aaron, Something Else!

"The remarkable interplay of three equal partners makes for music that rivets. This is a holy grail of free music." –Grego Edwards, Gapplegate Music Review

+ Read Hank Shteamer's extensive live review (plus) of Farmers By Nature's August 9. 2014 performance. True very that not everyone can do this; far fewer still can do it so bountifully.
'Somewhere we've never been: Farmers By Nature at Shapeshifter Lab'

Farmers By Nature is the phenomenal trio of drummer Gerald Cleaver, bassist William Parker, and pianist Craig Taborn. Each are internationally renowned master musicians-improvisers-composers-leaders. When they work together as Farmers By Nature, it is as a complete improvising musical collective; all of their meetings are auspicious and rewarding events which reveal their intrinsic focus on narrative arc. “FBN is a band that takes seriously its mission to communicate to listeners, even though there is not a compromise in sight. The group move as one", wrote PopMatters' Will Layman on the their previous album, 2011’s Out of This World’s Distortions. “Their chemistry is evident from the first notes." added Marc Medwin in The New York City Jazz Record, and Chicago Reader's Peter Margasak noted, "It's a cliche that good improvised music doesn't sound improvised, but it more than applies here.”

Love and Ghosts is their long-awaited third release and features two complete concert meetings recorded in France during their inaugural tour of Europe. The varying landscapes & cityscapes they traveled through, and as importantly, the sheer ability to travel & freely cross borders unlike the majority of the world's population, inform the two extraordinarily fertile nights of sound fluency and invention captured in highest fidelity and presented here. Luminescent melodies refracting through gently rippling rhythms, kaleidoscopic fractals, roadhouse abstractions, and what sounds like a train rapidly laying its own track while nimbly scaling mountains are but some of the sonic treasures to be experienced on Love and Ghosts. –SJ

Gerald Cleaver writes:
"Craig, William and I are always seeking a connection to that which is and always has been. It's about being party to an actualization of sorts: bearing witness to certain very specific, essential truths that can be spoken of in an infinite number of ways, and sounded in an amazingly singular way. The music is a telling and a prescription for us and for others."
